New on SI: David Montgomery Suffers Groin Injury but NOT Carted Off Field

Chicago's second year running back slipped in practice and hobbled off the field.

Breaking news out of Chicago where running back David Montgomery was helped off the field with what head coach Matt Nagy is saying is a groin injury. Montgomery was injured during the first portion of Wednesday’s practice which was open to the media.

BearsDigest editor Gene Chamberlain was at the Bears practice and confirmed Montgomery was assisted off the field and didn't get on a cart until he was on the sidelines. Chamberlain suggests the cart was used because of the distance from the practice field to the training facility is about 300 yards.

There’s no official word yet on the severity of the strain but Sports Illustrated will continue to update this story as more details are released. For the time being, Tarik Cohen is expected to take over a larger role in the backfield and Sports Illustrated’s Ben Heisler suggests gadget player Cordarrelle Patterson could see an expanded in the Bears backfield if Montgomery is forced to miss any action. Some notable free-agent running backs include Devonta Freeman, CJ Prosise and Marshawn Lynch.

The latest Average Draft Position data shows Montgomery coming off the board as the No. 25 running back and 55th overall player while teammate Tarik Cohen is the 33rd running back drafted and the 86th overall player.
